About The Study

The Smart Home Study is designed and implemented by the Smart Home Consortium, companies currently focused on improving energy usage throughout California. These companies include: Alternative Energy Systems Consulting (AESC), Oxygen Initiative, Center for Sustainable Energy® (CSE), and Itron, Inc.

The purpose of the study is to research how potential participants like you integrate new home-based technology into your lifestyle to reduce your energy costs. The focus of the study will be your response to variable price signals under a Time of Use (TOU) rate structure.

Those who qualify will be asked to enroll in a Smart Home Study TOU electric billing rate. Note: Participants who do not change their rate will not receive bill protection during the study.

At the conclusion of the study, participants will select from then available SDG&E rates. Note: NEM rate holders, currently grandfathered in a tiered or older rate, who choose to participate, should be advised they will not be eligible for those NEM rates at the conclusion of the study.

To determine if you qualify, we ask you to download your Green Button data (provided by SDG&E) [https://www.sdge.com/green-button/download-my-green-button-data] to us for rate comparison and submit it at the end of the questionnaire. This will allow us to determine your potential for savings. We also invite you to consider your current billing rate as a benchmark for the new TOU rates.

Participants will receive ongoing analysis and savings advice throughout the study. You’ll also receive a OpenWay® integrated meter and gateway for automated decision-making to assist you in reducing your energy usage.
